Everyone knows that it's good for the environment to recycle paper and cardboard and then to buy recycled paper. But when it comes right down to making a purchase and completing the recycling circle, sometimes the choices are not always clear. Currently, there are a variety of papers available that use alternatives to virgin wood fiber. To help people understand how they can help the environment by using these new papers, a number of environmental groups from around the state have joined together to hold the first annual Alternative Paper Conference at Bates College on Saturday, April 4.
According to lead organizer Heather Burt, of the environmental education group C.U.R.E., "The conference is open to all. The day-long agenda of speakers and workshops will explore the importance of using recycled, chlorine-free and alternative fiber paper. The conference will provide practical answers and resources for those wishing to start using these papers and to those who simply would like to learn more."
The entire spectrum of alternative paper will be addressed: purchasing and using, industrial production, recycling, agricultural production of various fibers and their potential benefit to Maine farmers, environmental benefits and economic benefits. The conference will bring together grassroots activists, students, marketers, producers, users, farmers and policy experts. Speakers and workshops will provide an overview of the many benefits of expanding tree-free, 100% post-consumer and chlorine-free paper markets. Other workshops will address the specific needs of printers and college, business and government paper purchasers.
Andy Kerr, former Executive Director of the Oregon Natural Resources Council will give the keynote address. Other speakers include be Anne Hagstrom of the Natural Resources Council of Maine and Meghan Clancy-Hepburn of the Wood Reduction Clearinghouse.
All events will be held in Olin Arts Center. Registration starts at 9 AM with opening remarks at 9:45. There will be four speakers in the morning followed by an hour for lunch, provided by the conference. After lunch there will be two sessions of panel discussions with a choice of three panels, or topics, in each session. Closing remarks will take place from 4:30 until 5. The registration fee is $15, which includes lunch. Student fee is lower.
