Maine Pioneer in Environmental Education: Diane Becker

by Jonathan Carter

Diane Becker sadly passed away last July. She was the founder of Audubon Expedition Institute, an environmental experiential learning school offering undergraduate and graduate degrees located in Belfast. Under Diane's leadership the school led the way nationally in pioneering and promoting environmental leadership - the type of leadership so desperately need to restore the health of the planet.

Diane was not only a member of FEN, but a personal friend. We shared the passion of compassion for all things wild. I deeply grieve her untimely loss, but find strength in knowing that Diane's work continues to flourish through all the people she helped find direction and meaning in dedicating their lives to helping to save the planet. On a trip to Quoddy Head Diane once wrote " I walked quietly through the bog and was reminded of the snow covered mass of last winter. I used to come out here and lie spread eagle on the snow. The Druids knew something when they said the earth would speak to you if you slept on it. With eighteen years of sleeping on the ground. I just knew that's true."
